Now I am going OSX, I am typically trying to start using software instead of configuring it as my workload is much higher now I am entering my M.Sc studies and I have less time to play with potential inconsistencies.Gcc10 is pickier with types and fails to build ESMF resulting in type mismatches

I have spent most of my time in the *NIX world dealing with compiling packages and tweaking for perfection. Note: that you are free to choose a more recent distribution of gfortran, which may be obtained via MacPorts or Homebrew. I am just trying to find a more "native" (in lieu of a better word, neglecting that OSX is a BSD derivative) method of package management. If it turns out that this is the best way to go, then of course, I will use MacPorts. A good portion of the build problems reported on these lists are related to Fortran on OS X, and a specific gfortran build at is recommended for a reason.

However, I am trying ensure consistency on my system and avoid multiple package sources. That said, if a 'Macports' section is added there should be a strong disclaimer that it is not the recommended way to install numpy/scipy. Having experience with BSD and Gentoo, I am extremely familiar with Ports/Portage and like the system very much. Most of the applications still worked after the update, but one of the applications that did not work was g95 (my fortran compile. store Amber trajectories, can be optionally built with Fortran support. I recently updated my operating system from OS X 10.8 to OS X 10.9. You really should give one or both of MacPorts and fink a try. Before installing MacPorts, you will have to install Apples developer tools. MacPorts, fink, and a few other projects are attempts to provide that Linux-like functionality to us Mac owners.

One of the nice things about linux is that the huge array of high quality open source tools that can be downloaded for free from a trustworthy site. I can't resist: What is wrong with MacPorts (or fink as an alternative)?
